Born from a passion for thoughtful design and quality craftsmanship, Dave’s journey with The Urban Electric Co. began in 2002 after he and his wife, Jennifer “Jen” Dawson, moved to Charleston, South Carolina. After struggling to find unique, handcrafted lighting options for their historic home renovation, the couple opened a showroom on Upper King Street and began building what would become one of America’s most respected lighting manufacturers.
In 2003, Dave partnered with Creative Director Michael Amato, and together they helped turn a small 500-square-foot workshop into a thriving company built around artistry, innovation, and skilled craftsmanship. Through years of dedication and leadership, The Urban Electric Co. grew into a major force in the luxury design world, eventually expanding its manufacturing operations across Charleston.
Under Dave’s guidance, the company became known for producing exceptional handcrafted lighting fixtures that found their way into prestigious homes, hotels, and commercial spaces around the world. The company’s work included projects for renowned destinations such as Augusta National, Soho House, the Four Seasons, and other notable properties.
One of the defining moments in Dave’s career came in 2009 when The Urban Electric Co. was commissioned to create custom lanterns for the private residence of the White House during the administration of President Barack Obama. The project highlighted the company’s reputation for excellence and the dedication of its skilled artisans.
Beyond his achievements in business, Dave was admired for creating a workplace culture centered on respect, opportunity, and community. His commitment to supporting employees and developing future generations of craftspeople led to initiatives such as UECO University, an apprenticeship program designed to preserve and strengthen traditional manufacturing skills.
